Tyrion Davis-Price competing for backup role

Third-round RB rookie Tyrion Davis-Price will compete for the second-string role in the San Francisco 49ers backfield behind RB Elijah Mitchell, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports. (Source: Matt Maiocco, NBC Sports)

Fantastic impact: San Francisco has been a deep and frustrating backfield for fantasy managers over the past half-decade, and the 2022 season looks no different. According to Maiocco, the starting job looks like Mitchell’s to lose, but health is a concern for the second-year player. Sitting behind Mitchell on the depth chart are RBs Trey Sermon and Jeff Wilson. Maiocco says the two, alongside Davis-Price, will be competing for the substitute position this season. Whoever emerges from the backfield as the No. 2 could be a valuable handcuff if Mitchell gets injured, but certainly head coach Kyle Shanahan has shown he can be unpredictable when it comes to who he plays at. RB. Rookie Davis-Price is currently playing as an average RB65 in half-PPR formats, according to FantasyPros, the third highest among the 49ers, and could be a good late investment after San Francisco felt the need to invest some capital decent in him this offseason.

Leonard Fournette loses weight for training camp

According to Greg Auman of The Athletic, RB Leonard Fournette coach Jordan Bush said the running back returned “bigger than [they] wanted,” but they trained to get rid of the extra weight. (Source: Greg Auman, athletics)

Fantastic impact: Fournette is coming off his most productive fantasy season since his rookie year, finishing as RB1 for the second time in five seasons. The LSU product had 1,266 scrimmage yards and 10 total touchdowns in 14 games in 2021. After reports emerged that Fournette showed up to training camp well overweight, Bush said they passed Fournette in a “fat camp,” putting him through saunas and extra cardio every day to help with weight loss. If Fournette can get back into shape before the season, he could become a value if public confidence continues to remain low due to weight issues. Fournette now averages RB12 in PPR formats, according to FantasyPros.

Mac Jones shows ‘dramatic’ improvement ahead of second year

Mac Jones head coach Bill Belichick has seen “dramatic” improvement in his sophomore caller this offseason and has had teammates singing his praises throughout the offseason according to NESN’s Zack Cox.

Fantastic impact: Jones would have been impressive in spring training and is coming off a rookie season in which he hasn’t been asked too many things, namely his 3 pass attempt game against Buffalo. Jones looks set to take the next step in his development this season and could become much more fantasy relevant. Last season, Jones finished his rookie campaign with 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with a QBR of 50.9, all numbers he can easily surpass in 2022. Jones could potentially be a type dormant league-winning quarterback if he puts it all together with Belichick at the reins, especially since he can be drafted in later rounds after completing your other positions with more certified stallions.
